General Layout
A fixed width site is one where the page is set to a specific fixed width, regardless of the user's browser or monitor size. A fixed width of 1000 pixels would ensure that users with 1024x768 monitors have a pleasant viewing experience without annoying side-scrolling.
In comparison, a fluid layout is the opposite - there is not a fixed width and the content will always display using the maximum width of each individual user's web browser, without a horizontal scroll bar.
